Quelling your inner squeal is one of the many lessons a mother must learn, and quick. From the first time you see a newborn nappy, to the last time you sluiced some sick-y sheets, there is a lot to make you want to squeal in child-rearing. So there I was, enjoying some Mother’s Day sitting-down time in the sun, when what should be thrust in my face but these little fellas: a couple of slimy frogs that looked about to fly out of my eldest’s boy’s hands right into my silently-screaming face. But I adore and want to encourage their fearlessness in the face of nature, so I held my nerve and managed to say, “Oh, how lovely, well done! Don’t let them dry out in the sun, now”, while retching a little into my cup of tea.
The boys are always presenting me with gifts of nature – matted feathers, empty (or is it?) snailshell, a wiggly worm – “Look, mummy, it’s head’s ‘come’ off!” “Don’t worry, it’ll grow a new one..!” But this is the first time I’ve been faced with grown frogs. I’m not that squeamish, but I was really hoping that the next time I saw a frog, it would be my darling Freddo on Easter Day.

No Freddos for me till Lent is over, but meanwhile I’d love to be considered for a BIB award in the Fresh Voice, Laugh or Writer category. Simply click on one of the badges below!
LOL – luckily I am not squeamish at all which is just as well having two boys with enquiring minds and grubby hands full of scavenged delights I am frequently at the receiving end of all things potentially worthy of a scream of disgust! I actually really like frogs and our pond is currently full of tadpoles …. and we even caught a leech from there yesterday (it was VERY small!).
I’m trying my best to be cool with it – letting a ladybird walk over my hand, fine; catching a frog, I’m not quite there yet! I certainly am not ready for LEECHES!! Respect!
Ha ha H has an obsession with spiders at the moment so waiting to get one flung in my face!!!
Yikes! I don’t know which is worse!
Funny how parenthood forces us to get over our own “eek” moments. I love bugs. I would take a career change at the drop of a hat to become an entomologist, but it has taken the children to get me passed my spider avoidance. I’m there now….sort of!
I am so impressed! I’m not mad on bugs. Ladybirds yes, woodlice, no.
OMG I am so not going to be a good mom I knew it! I can never ever touch worms and frogs =P

Oh my goodness I hadn’t considered live gifts! I hope you survived. They are rather impressive though and it sounds like you’re used to receiving these kind of presents! I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day. Thank you for sharing with #whatsthestory
Oh yes, I’ve had the odd worm and spider thrust in my face! The things we must put up with as mothers 🙂 #WhatstheStory
Haha so true quelling your inner squeal! I couldn’t do this! Mads once held a cockroach at an event we were at- I literally thought I was going to say ‘bleugh’ out loud!
Oh dear, I would want to run away and hide. But I suppose that’s the life of having children, especially little boys. I expect when my 22-month old gets bigger he’ll be bringing all sorts of creepy crawlies to my attention. 🙁 #whatsthestory
oh no that would make me sick. I am the opposite of at one with nature. But as a little girl I used to chew sticks – go figure! xx
You. Are. Brave.
Eeeeek 🙂
Years of practice!
Oh grim…. don’t think I would like a frog shoved in my face either – yuk! Little boys eh? X
I used to have exactly the same issue with frog (or toad) gifts when the boys were younger. I’m afraid I wasn’t able to quell my inner eek though – I remember eeking all the way down the garden!
